Airborne Awareness

The Electronic GPS Anomaly Detection System (EGADS) is a global positioning system (GPS) situational awareness (SA) that was developed by MITRE in partnership with IS4S. It provides a roll on, roll off capability to passively monitor GPS L1/L2 bands by running a suite of complementary GPS spoofing and jamming detection algorithms.

EGADS provides indications to notify users and downstream systems of the presence of interference that may impact GPS-based systems on air, ground, or naval platforms. When interference is detected, EGADS captures the radio frequency (RF) environment by recording in-phase and quadrature (IQ) data at 30 MHz around both L1 and L2 onto a removable solid-state drive (SSD).

Key Features:

  • Interference, jamming, and spoofing indications

  • Records IQ at 30 MHz around L1 and L2

  • Internal LNA

  • Removable 4TB NVMe SSD

  • Onboard webserver hosting interface for configuration and environment visualization

Rugged, Proven, and Extensible

EGADS fills a critical need in providing GPS SA to flight operations. IS4S and MITRE designed EGADS to meet aircraft survivability and air worthiness specifications so it can be quickly deployed on a variety of air platforms. It is compatible with AC and DC avionics power buses and can integrate with multiple aircraft antenna types. EGADS’s ability has been proven in operationally relevant environments on multiple aircraft, including the KC-135, C-17, C-130J, and KC-46.

While EGADS was designed for deployment on aircraft, it is also capable of operating within ground platforms or at static installations, and EGADS has been successfully tested within ground vehicles in operationally relevant environments. Additionally, EGADS can support safe flight operations by monitoring the threat environment around airfields. Ground crew and pilots can use the GPS SA to alter flight activities and protocols accordingly.
